» UK National Lottery Winners – It could be you?
The UK National Lottery logo is recognised by 90% of people in the UK – the famous crossed fingers, representing hope and luck. The Lottery slogan is 'It Could Be You' – playing on the fact that you never know when lady luck may strike.

What happens when we do hit those magic numbers and win a prize?

With the UK lottery, prizes up to £75 can be claimed from a retailer. Prizes up to £200 can be paid out at some retailers and at the post office and up to £50,000 can be claimed at a post office. Prizes up to £50,000 can also be claimed in the post. Anything over £50,000 must be claimed from the National Lottery HQ in person with a proof of identity.

For some people, winning the Lottery or Euro-Millions has changed their life. Not every story is one of happiness but for most ordinary people, the chance to win a fortune means an end to financial difficulties, being able to quit a job they hate, being able to buy a house or being able to treat others and more importantly, the freedom to choose what they want to do in life.

In March 2008, Luke Pittard won £1.3 Million on the lottery. Formally a member of staff at McDonalds, most people would assume he would be more than happy to leave the fast food chain – instead he returned to his job 18 months later, missing his work mates and getting bored with the leisurely lifestyle.

Winning a more modest jackpot of £235,588, Daniel Williams was on holiday with his girlfriend when he got a fortune cookie – inside was six numbers. He used these numbers to play the lottery and won his fortune.

Winners of the lottery vary greatly; there is no rule and no logic to who can or will win. Take the story of Iorworth Hoare, a convicted rapist who was on temporary release from jail and happened to buy a lottery ticket; this ticket won him £7 Million pounds with Lotto Extra. He has since been told that his victims will be allowed to claim for compensation from his large fortune.

One of the most impressive wins was with the Euro-Millions, when Dolores McNamara won £77 Million pounds. She went into hiding after the win due to the sheer media interest in the vast amount of money but returned a few days later to receive her funds.

However, it really pays to look after your ticket and make sure you cash it in within the 180 day limit. In March of 2008, a ticket bought in Devon worth a staggering £6.8 Million after hitting all the number on Euro-Millions lay unclaimed – once the deadline had passed the money went on to good causes.

The fact is as wonderful as all these cash prizes are, being able to manage a big fortune and keeping your head when all those around you are losing theirs is important. Winning the lottery is once in a lifetime; it pays to look after your prize so it comes to benefit you in the years to come.
